Menopause Q&A

What is menopause?

Menopause refers to the time in your life when your menstrual cycle stops, marking the end of your fertility. You’re diagnosed with menopause after you’ve gone 12 consecutive months without your period. Most women in the United States reach menopause around age 51.

Before you’re officially in menopause, you may notice changes in your menstrual cycle and experience some of the symptoms associated with menopause, which occur due to fluctuations in your estrogen levels.

This period is referred to as perimenopause and usually begins while you’re in your 40s, although can start in your 30s, and lasts an average of four years.

What are menopause symptoms?

The symptoms you experience as you approach menopause may vary in both type and severity. Some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Depression
  • Weight gain
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Fatigue
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Low libido
  • Pain during intercourse

In addition to the physical symptoms, the changes in your estrogen levels also increase your risk of chronic health issues, including heart disease and osteoporosis.

How is menopause managed?

You can’t stop menopause, but the team at Woman to Woman Ob/Gyn Medical Group offers treatments to help you manage your symptoms. Your menopause management plan may include:

  • Hormone therapy
  • Vaginal estrogen
  • Antidepressants
  • Clonidine or gabapentin (for hot flashes)

Due to the health risks associated with menopause, the team also talks to you about diet and exercise to help improve or maintain heart and bone health, and they may suggest vitamin and mineral supplements.

To alleviate vaginal dryness and pain, the team at Woman to Woman Ob/Gyn Medical Group also offers MonaLisa Touch®, which is an advanced laser tool that stimulates the production of collagen and elastin and improves vascularization of your vaginal tissue to restore vaginal health. The advanced laser tool may also improve urinary incontinence and vaginal laxity.

Is hormone therapy safe?

Many women have concerns about hormone therapy for the treatment of menopausal symptoms due to risks related to heart disease and breast cancer.

Hormone therapy is a safe and effective treatment for menopause. To reduce any risks, the team at Woman to Woman Ob/Gyn Medical Group utilizes natural hormonal therapy.

In addition to relieving your symptoms, hormone therapy may also improve heart and bone health.

You may not be considered a good candidate for hormone therapy if you have a history of breast cancer or heart disease.
