Birth Control Q&A

What is birth control?

Birth control refers to the various methods used to help prevent pregnancy, which includes both medical and nonmedical options. Having access to the birth control that best meets your family planning needs puts you in control of when and how many children you want to have.

The team at Woman to Woman Ob/Gyn Medical Group specializes in family planning and offers birth control consultations to help you understand your contraceptive options, so you can make the best choice that meets your needs.

What are the types of birth control?

When it comes to birth control, you have many choices. However, some methods are more effective than others. The types of birth control include:

Sterilization

Sterilization is a permanent form of birth control and may be recommended if you have no future pregnancy plans. For women, the procedure is referred to as tubal ligation, or what you may know better as having your tubes tied and prevents pregnancy by stopping sperm from reaching your egg.

Short-acting hormonal birth control

The birth control pill, patch, and Depo-Provera injection are short-acting hormonal methods of birth control, which must be used as directed to get the most protection against pregnancy. Short-acting hormonal birth control works by stopping ovulation, or the release of an egg.

Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs)

LARCs are devices that can prevent pregnancy for 3-10 years. Intrauterine devices (IUDs) such as Mirena, Skyla, Llletta, Paragard are available at their office. Also, the Nexplanon birth control implant is offered as a contraceptive choice.

Barrier methods

Barrier methods include the cervical cap and diaphragm and prevent pregnancy by stopping sperm from reaching your egg. Condoms are also considered a barrier method of birth control, however, they don’t require a prescription.

Although many methods of birth control can prevent pregnancy, they don’t protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The team at Woman to Woman Ob/Gyn Medical Group can talk to you about how you can protect yourself from contracting an STI.

How do I know what type of birth control I need?

The team at Woman to Woman Ob/Gyn Medical Group can help you determine the method of birth control best suited for you during your consultation. The best method may depend on your future pregnancy plans, your sexual activity, and your overall gynecological health.
